Seção 3.2 O módulo de um número real
Definição 3.2.1.
Dado \(x\in\mathbb{R}\) definimos o módulo (ou valor absoluto) de \(x\) como
Observação 3.2.2.
Note que \(|x|=\max\{x,-x\}\text{.}\)
Exemplo 3.2.3.
Calcule os seguintes números:
- \(\displaystyle |3|\)
- \(\displaystyle |-3|\)
- \(\displaystyle |0|\)
- \(\displaystyle |3-\pi|\)
Proposição 3.2.4.
Para quaisquer \(x,y\in\mathbb{R}\text{,}\)
- \(|x|\geq 0\text{;}\)
- \(|x|=|-x|\text{;}\)
- \(-|x|\leq x\leq |x|\text{;}\)
- \(|x|^2=x^2\text{;}\)
- \(|x\cdot y|=|x|\cdot|y|\text{;}\)
- \(\left|\dfrac{x}{y}\right|=\dfrac{|x|}{|y|}, \text{ se } y\neq 0\text{;}\)
- Desigualdade triangular: \(|x+y|\leq |x|+|y|\text{.}\)
Demonstração.
item 1. Pelo item 2 do Axioma 3.1.1, ou \(x=0\) ou \(x\in \mathbb{R}^+\) ou \(-x\in \mathbb{R}^+\text{.}\) Como \(|x| = \max\{x,-x\}\text{,}\) claramente \(|x|\geq 0\text{.}\)
item 2. \(|-x| = \max\{-x, -(-x)\} = \max\{-x, x\} = \max\{x, -x\} = |x|\text{.}\)
item 3. Claramente \(x\leq |x|\text{.}\) Como \(-x\leq |x|\text{,}\) multiplicando por \(-1\) obtemos, \(x\geq -|x|\text{.}\) Logo,
item 4. Existem 3 casos:
- Se \(x>0\text{,}\) \(|x|=x\text{,}\) então \(|x|^2=x^2\text{.}\)
- Se \(x\lt 0\text{,}\) \(|x|=-x\text{,}\) então \(|x|^2=(-x)^2 = x^2\text{.}\)
- Se \(x=0\text{,}\) então \(|x|^2=0=x^2\text{.}\)
item 5. Basta mostar que \(|x\cdot y|^2 = (|x|\cdot |y|)^2\text{,}\) já que são maiores ou iguais a zero. Note que
item 6.
item 7. Inicialmente temos, \(|x|\geq x\) e \(|y|\geq y\text{.}\) Somando membro a membro obtemos,
Demonstração.
Lembrando que \(|x| = \max\{x, -x\}\text{.}\)
- Se \(|x|=x\) e \(|x|=a\text{,}\) então \(x=a\text{.}\)
- Se \(|x|=-x\) e \(|x|=a\text{,}\) então \(-x=a\Rightarrow x=-a\text{.}\)
Exemplo 3.2.6.
Resolva as equações modulares
- \(|2x-3|=2\text{;}\)
- \(|(x-1)(2x+1)|=x-1\text{;}\)
item 1. Pela proposição anterior,
- \(\displaystyle 2x-3=2 \Leftrightarrow 2x = 5 \Leftrightarrow x=\frac{5}{2}.\)
- \(2x-3=-2 \Leftrightarrow 2x=-2+3 \Leftrightarrow 2x=1 \Leftrightarrow x= \dfrac{1}{2}\text{.}\)
Ou seja, o conjunto solução é dado por \(S = \{\frac{1}{2}, \frac{5}{2}\}\text{.}\)
item 2. Inicialmente, note que, o valor absoluto sempre é maior ou igual a zero. Portanto \(x-1\geq 0\text{,}\) logo \(x\geq 1\text{.}\) Pela proposição anterior,
- \((x-1)(2x+1)=x-1 \Leftrightarrow 2x(x-1) = 0 \Leftrightarrow x=0\) ou \(x=1\text{.}\)
- \((x-1)(2x+1)=-(x-1) \Leftrightarrow 2(x^2-1)=0 \Leftrightarrow x=-1\) ou \(x=1\text{.}\)
Ou seja, o conjunto solução é dado por \(S=\{1\}\text{,}\) já que \(x\geq 1\text{.}\)
Proposição 3.2.7.
Seja \(c>0\text{,}\) então
- \(|x|\lt c ~ \Leftrightarrow ~-c\lt x\lt c\text{;}\)
- \(|x|\leq c ~ \Leftrightarrow ~-c\leq x\leq c\text{;}\)
- \(|x|>c ~ \Leftrightarrow ~ x\lt -c ~ \mbox{ou} ~ x>c\text{;}\)
- \(|x|\geq c ~ \Leftrightarrow ~ x\leq -c ~ \mbox{ou} ~ x\geq c\text{.}\)
Corolário 3.2.8.
Sejam \(a,x,\delta\in \mathbb{R}\) com \(\delta >0\text{.}\) Então
Demonstração.
Pela Proposição 3.2.7,
Somando \(a\text{,}\) obtemos o resultado.
Exemplo 3.2.9.
Resolva as inequações modulares
- \(|x-5|\lt 2\text{;}\)
- \(|2x-3|\geq 5\text{.}\)
